Abstract:
A technique for fabricating a provisional fixed prosthesis for an edentulous arch immediately following abutment connection, termed "Conversion Prosthesis", is described in detail. Some of the advantages are that it: provides a fixed prosthesis immediately following stage II surgery with improved function, stability and distribution of load; protects the sutured mucosa; serves as a prototype for the final prosthesis; can be used as a verification jig; preserves the original vertical dimension of occlusion; aids in obtaining and transferring the interocclusal record; assists in long term patient maintenance; and reduces treatment visits. The advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages for its use.
